Kayne Griffin Corcoran is pleased to collaborate with The Estate of Jiro Takamatsu on the first annual commemorative presentation of Jiro Takamatsu’s work. The exhibition will include two works – one sculptural and one of paper - from his seminal Oneness series, both from 1972, in which he tore paper or broke apart materials and then reassembled the pieces into the original shape. Also included in the exhibition are several works on paper spanning from 1972 to 1983. This coincides with a simultaneous exhibition at Yumiko Chiba Associates in Tokyo which began a yearly showing of Takamatsu’s work in 2010. On view at Yumiko Chiba Associates will be a documentary of Takamatsu discussing his work from 1974 on the television program Atorie wo tazunete (Visiting an Artist's Studio).
This exhibition offers a further review of Takamatsu’s practice following significant examinations of Japanese avant-garde art across the globe. Jiro Takamatsu's (1936–1998) career spanned over forty years, during which time his considerable influence extended as an artist, theorist and teacher in Japanese postwar culture. He represented Japan at the Venice Biennale (Carlo Cardazzo Price, 1968); exhibited at the Paris Biennial (1969); Sao Paulo Biennial (1973); and Documenta 6, Kassel (1977). Most recently, Takamatsu has been the subject of major retrospectives in Japan, staged at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (2014) and The National Museum of Modern Art, Osaka (2015). These two exhibitions were curated from differing perspectives and offered a comprehensive overview of the artist’s oeuvre. The first solo exhibition of Takamastu’s work in Los Angeles was presented earlier this year at Kayne Griffin Corcoran.
