Mary Corse
Ahead of her solo museum survey exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Mary Corse preparing in her Topanga Canyon, California studio. Corse emerged in the mid-1960s as one of the few women associated with the West Coast Light and Space movement. She has a deep fascination with perception and with the possibility that light itself could serve as both a subject and material of art. Unlike her contemporaries who turned to sculptural and environmental projects, Corse approaches the question of light through painting. She engages with the tropes of modernist painting while charting her own course through studies in quantum physics and investigations into pioneering painting materials. “Mary Corse: A Survey in Light” ran from June 8 through November 25, 2018.
