In response to the tragic 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy, Beverly Pepper has created and donated Amphisculpture – a work of Land Art connected to the restoration and recovery of the Basilica of Collemaggio, built in 1288. Pepper culled from the visual archive of the Basilica, as well as the Parco del Sole, to inform her design and its integration to the landscape. At its core, the work is an open-air park and theater for the people of L’Aquila – it has a seating capacity of one thousand people. However, the work also responds to the rich history of the town and the sculptural elements and design motifs change naturally with the seasons—providing a public space that shifts and grows with the changes that come.
